Why the History and Archives are Important to All Generations

Tre Hargett

Tennessee Secretary of State

The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) houses the collective memory of Tennesseans.  In its vast collections are millions of precious documents, including photographs and maps and the state’s constitutions. The Library and Archives preserves these and other irreplaceable state records, as well as family treasures and provides training, support, and financial assistance to public libraries and county archives throughout Tennessee.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett is the chief executive officer of the Department of State, which includes the Library and Archives. A native of Ripley, Tennessee, Secretary Hargett now lives in Hendersonville with his wife and two sons.  He is a strong proponent for Tennessee History Day, a state affiliate of National History Day competition, for which ETHS is the East Tennessee District coordinator.
