This interest in Crockett as portrayed on screen evolved into a lifelong exploration of David Crockett’s story as documented in original sources. He has spent most of his adult life researching archives and libraries to discover the historic Crockett. Enriching Joe’s personal interest is the fact that he owns “Betsy,” David Crockett’s rifle which is on loan to the East Tennessee Historical Society. Ownership of the rifle has descended in his family since the early nineteenth century; a fact that makes this lifelong journey even more special and important.
