Local baseball clubs are often tied to community identity and pride. Dr. Roessner will explore how Knoxville baseball clubs–from the amateur teams of the late-1860s to the modern pros, such as the Indians, Giants, and Smokies–were covered in the sports pages and how this in turn served as a community-building forum.

A professor in the University of Tennessee’s School of Journalism & Electronic Media, Dr. Amber Roessner teaches and studies media history and its relationship to cultural phenomena and practices. Roessner teaches the introduction to journalism and creative media, mass communications history, media reporting, advanced reporting, literary journalism, advanced sports writing, and qualitative methods.
