Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state.  The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region.  The ETHS educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

This Day In East Tennessee History

  • January 25, 1845

On this day in 1845, Milton Brown, a Tennessee Whig from the Eleventh District, secured the adoption in the House in Committee of the Whole of a resolution in lieu of the original on the basis of the annexation of Texas. Tennessee Whigs supported the measure because it imposed several conditions on Texas, one of which was squatter sovereignty south of the Missouri Compromise line.
