Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state.  The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region.  The ETHS educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

This Day In East Tennessee History

  • February 24, 1794

On this day in 1794, the group of candidates for the new house of representatives for the Tennessee territory met in Knoxville. They nominated 10 men from whom President Washington subsequently selected 5 to constitute a council (the upper house of the legislative body). The group also drafted an address to Congress advocating a war against the Creek Indians.
