Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state. The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region. William Blount organized Knox and Jefferson counties into a new military and judicial district named Hamilton on this day in 1793.
The Bijou Theatre in Knoxville opened on this day in 1909 with George M. Cohan’s musical Little Johnny Jones. The theatre sat 1,503 with room for extra chairs in the loggias and boxes. It closely resembled the Lyric Theatre in Atlanta and was praised by the Knoxville Sentinel for its simplicity and beauty.
