Overshot coverlet believed to have been woven by enslaved African Americans of the Grove family. Pattern is variation of "Double Bowknot with Table" (see p.371 Of Coverlets, Wilson and Kennedy). Two lengths, each 30" wide, with center seam. White cotton warp; weft is navy wool, white wool and red wool. (white/natural, blue and red) Mid-19th century.
9/3/07 - Textile expert Merikay Waldvogel accepts that a c.1860 date could be possible for this coverlet.
